The Name My Mother Gave Me

Director/Producer: Eli Tal-El
(Israel, 2008, 60 min.) Sheba Film Festival 2009 NYC Premiere!

This moving documentary follows a group of Israeli adolescents, mostly born in Ethiopia, on a life changing journey. The picturesque valley of Ethiopian region of Gondar becomes the scene of remarkable discoveries, as these children reunite with their past, each undergoing personal transformation. This journey, the climax of a year long leadership program, turns a group of peers into brothers, and young adolescents into family, as they experience moments of joy and disappointment, and discover shared values, hopes and dreams. For Uri, Yanesau, Yuri and the rest, life from this point onward will never be the same. The Name My Mother Gave Me grapples with universal questions of personal identity and belonging, through the particular story of these young Israelis, as they confront their past and move forward, each taking a giant leap of faith.
