Shabbat Dinner and Sigd Celebration

What is Sigd?

Sigd is a unique festival celebrated by Ethiopian Jews 49 days after Yom Kippur.
The word Sigd in Ethiopic means "to worship" or loosely translated as "bowing". It signifies the reverence to as well as rememberance of the Covenant made when the Torah was given to Moses on Mount Sinai.

RED LEAVES
Meseganio Tadela, 74, is a hard, obstinate, and nervous man. He immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia 28 years ago with his family. He has chosen to zealously retain his culture, talks very little, and hardly speaks Hebrew. After losing his wife, he is afraid of dying and being alone.

SISTER WIFE

Directed by Timna Goldstein, Documentary, 60 min, Israel 2000, English

Synopsis:
In 1969, weary of the harsh way of life in the U.S. ghettos and motivated by a sense of lack of origin, a number of African-Americans moved to southern Israel and established communities and a new identity. The members of these communities became known as the "Hebrew Israelites"; they believe only in the Law of the Torah and, as in Biblical days, they practice polygamy, allowing their men to marry up to seven women.

YOUTHS OF SHASHA

Synopsis:

This documentary talks about the situation of the music-talented youth in Shashamane, Ethiopia. This is a piece of land that Haile Selassie gave to all Rastafarian people who decided to come back to Africa. They do not have a studio or music distribution deals that can support them. Yet, because they love and need to express themselves by music, they keep doing it, facing many obstacles.
